No matter how strong your offensive system is on a tactical level, it will always be limited by the ability of your players to execute it correctly. Even with talented players, your team must understand how to take advantage of all the scoring opportunities within your offense.
NBA player development coach Mike Procopio has carefully analyzed what habits and skills are needed to build an unstoppable motion offense. In this video, he demonstrates how he teaches the top players in the world to recognize game situations and use the universal concepts that result in good offense. Through a variety of breakdown drills, Procopio shows you how to train your players in some of the most common tactics in today's offensive schemes.
Basic Offense
Teach players to intuitively move on the court by reading the defense and situation to maximize the offense's spacing and scoring opportunities. Coach Procopio demonstrates a simple offensive shell drill that will help your players understand when and where to move using tactics such as basket cuts and screen-aways.
Playing off the Post
Teach your perimeter players how to add value in offensive situations where you are trying to get the ball into the post. Simply standing in the same place can result in poor spacing that allows your opponent to trap the post. Procopio shows several options after feeding the post to space the floor and become a scoring threat. You will also learn how to play inside-out with skip passes and ball reversals to find open shooters.
Using Screens
Coach Procopio gives you simple breakdown drills to help your players understand the offensive reads they need to utilize in screening actions. You will learn how to take advantage of tight and wide pin downs. Procopio explains how to set up a defender, how and when to curl the screen, making the next pass when defenders help on the cutter, the proper footwork to score on flares, and more.
Drive & Kick
Against great defenses, your drive and kick game needs to evolve from 1-on-1 play into a team concept. Coach Procopio teaches how to play out of baseline drives with proper spacing and ball movement so you can get multiple drive and kick attacks. This will help your team collapse the defense to find open shooters and easy baskets at the rim.
Pick & Roll
One last offensive breakdown drill will teach your players how to maximize scoring opportunities in side ball screens. From the pick & roll situation, you will learn how to score through the ball handler, roller, or perimeter players moving in response to their defenders helping on the play. Great defenses are typically going to successfully defend the first pick & roll in a possession. Procopio also shows how your offense can flow into multiple ball screens to build upon the advantages created from the first attack.
Building a perimeter offense is a big piece to any motion offense. Once your players learn how to read defenders and create open opportunities, your team will score on the best defenses in your league!
