Matt Painter, as head men's coach at Purdue University since 2005, has become a staple of the college basketball scene. The leader of the Boilermakers has long had the reputation of being a hard-working head coach who stands behind the tenets of coaching beliefs and adheres to the tenets daily hard work and paying attention to details when it comes to his practices.
In this edition of the highly popular Open Practice instructional video series, Painter provides an incredible wealth of basketball insight and offers coaching practical strategies and teaching methods that coaches at all levels of competition will find valuable.
Defense Wins The Day, Defensive Work EVERY Day
Long known as a coach who advocates using ferocious man-to-man defense as the primary base for building a successful team defense, Painter shines the spotlight on his three favorite defensive drills to put players through each day to improve.
The three defensive drills include: "Sunrise Closeouts" a drill that teaches proper close-out technique, as well as help-and-recover principles, "Scrape & Snapback Closeouts," a drill to integrate perimeter-to-post traps and help-recovery, and a drill to helps defense challenge the offense at key attack points, called the "Elbow-Catch Drill."
Teaching Motion Offense
A staple of the Boilermakers men's basketball program has been its effective motion offense. In teaching motion offense, Painter uses this Open Practice to demonstrate why using specific drills in practice that emphasize reversing the basketball and changing sides of the floor is a key element for motion offense success.
Drills include "Motion Shooting," where perimeter players work on shots off down screens, backscreens, and flare screens, as well as versions of the same drill that incorporate a variety of player techniques and proper footwork for cutting off screens; also included are "4-on-4" situation drills that emphasize how to initiate the specific motion action.
Cut-Thru Zone Offense
Painter's Open Practice also provides an in-depth look at how to execute, teach and implement his 4-out, 1-in Cut-Thru Zone Offense. In this information-packed segment, you'll learn every aspect of this slicing and dicing, explosive offense, including perimeter-to-post movements, rules, keys to success with an emphasis on continuous movement.
For teaching Cut-Thru Zone Offense, you'll learn 5-on-0 drills that teach and reinforce its concepts, using "5-on-5 box-out" rebounding drills and competitive 5-on-5 practice segments to hone skills and reinforce the offensive rules. Plus, you'll see a press-offense segment that teaches "3 across" and "3 across hook" action.
Matt Painter is one of the best teachers of basketball and this Open Practice session reinforces it - and every coach who watches this will be the beneficiary of it!. Jam-packed with information that transforms high-level basketball strategies into easy-to-learn concepts.
