Jump into a live practice featuring Norfolk State University and head coach Robert Jones in this exciting on-court video! Coach Jones keeps things moving, operating his practice session at a brisk pace and passing along breakdown drills that you'll be able to take and use with your own team.
Breakdown Drills
You will get shooting drills that practice game situation shots in order to build your team's offensive skills. Coach Jones has his players work on mid-range shots, pick & pops, and pass and move into shots. Those same shots and actions work right into the quick hitters and offensive sets Norfolk State runs during this practice session. Jones provides breakdown drills that get players looks at the basket which are likely to occur during games.
Wide
"Wide" is a quick hitter with action downhill to the basket that incorporates hand-offs, pick & pops and backdoor cuts. It includes multiple looks and actions with opportunities for layups and open shots that are especially nice to run at the end of a game or out of a timeout. You'll see how Coach Jones prepares to run Wide effectively with breakdown drills. Once your players master the quick hitter, opposing defenses will be forced to defend not only screens, but backdoor cuts and dribble hand-offs.
6 Points
Coach Jones sets the defensive tone with the "6 Points" drill, which includes wing denial, post defense, help defense, bumping cutters, and closeouts. Athletes not involved in the drill provide energy and encouragement. 6 Points is a quick drill that covers different areas of defense and finishes with 1-on-1 competition. During the drill, Jones emphasizes finishing the drill with a box out, rebound, or turnover.
Next, you'll see different sets and breakdown drills of actions within Coach Jones' sets. Sets include movement without the ball, pick & pops, backdoor cuts, and dribble hand-offs.
This video from Coach Jones provides an open look at one of his team's practices. You'll be sure to come away with ideas for how to improve your team this season!
