Mike Brey has coached at every level of basketball from high school (with Hall of Fame coach Morgan Wootten at DeMatha HS), to college (with Mike Krzyzewski at Duke, then at Delaware and Notre Dame as head coach), to now at the NBA level. His wealth of knowledge is shared through practical drills that you can utilize within your program and valuable insight that can only come from years of experience in how to win the hearts and minds of your team. Mike Brey is a “confidence giver,” and he will give you the confidence and insight needed to improve as a coach on multiple levels!

In this video - you will learn:

  • Offensive breakdown drills that you can implement to improve your offensive attack!
  • A package of concepts that you can utilize to help your team play with a high level of basketball IQ!
  • New methods for your ball screen defense that will attack modern pick and roll concepts!
  • How to prepare your team to face the diverse challenges of any season!

Pre-Practice Passing Drills
Coach Brey begins his build ups by showing how you can combine guards and posts into 2v0 actions that emphasize game-like passing. These drills can be adapted to your offensive philosophy and implemented to begin your practice. Brey shows how developing this type of routine can help build your offensive identity by getting players to move, communicate, and pass in patterns of your offensive sets.

Coach Brey expands his 2v0 actions into 3v0 concepts. From these drills you can work on post entry actions. He encourages players to be imaginative and understand how to space and play off one another.

Once Coach Brey demonstrates various 3v0 actions, he transitions into 4v0 actions. He begins his drill by emphasizing curl actions that can be found in any offensive concept. He continues to show “good spots” on the floor that every offense needs to understand to have great spacing. Through these drills, players learn to play conceptual basketball with various actions.

Half Court Sets
Coach Brey transitions from breakdown drills into 5v0 drills designed to teach his sets. The first drill he introduces is his 5v0 cutters drill. This is a base concept in his offense to keep a flow. The concept is when in doubt you must cut. By applying constant pressure on the rim with cutting actions, gaps will open up that you can utilize to attack any defense.

Coach Brey continues his sets by giving some options to use out of the Horns alignment. These actions are either part of your playbook, or, you play opponents that use them. This segment allows you to see these actions and understand how to think about utilizing them to your own advantage.

After years of battling Jim Boeheim’s 2-3 zone, Coach Brey reveals to you some of the offensive concepts he utilized at Notre Dame to attack the zone. These concepts are must-add actions to your zone package!

Pick and Roll Defense
Coach Brey adds some insights on pick and roll defense toward the end of the video This insightful information was strengthened from the time recently spent in the NBA. This middle ball screen coverage he shares will help you stymie some of the modern offense concepts when it comes to pick and roll play.

All coaches are going to enjoy Mike Brey in the excellent video!
