Coach Bob Amsberry is known for creating one of the most successful D-III programs known for his well-balanced attack. In this video, you have a front row seat to watch a demonstration of one of the most efficiently run practices in all of college basketball today; you will see:

  • Warm-up drills
  • Split position work/drills
  • Transition offense and defense
  • Plays and more!

Passing Drills and Warm-Up
To begin every practice, Coach Amsberry runs his team through a passing, catching, and finishing drill that works on multiple actions. A post touch, give & go, and finish around the rim are all included in this fast-paced drill that uses all your players with no standing around.

Next, players split up by position to work on specific skills. Different finishing moves with perimeter players as well as post players are shown and demonstrated.

Shooting, Defense, and 5 on 0 Offense
Coach Amsberry wastes no time in his practices. In this video, he wants coaches to get a feel for how they maintain a proficient practice and never slow down. The Maverick Shooting drill incorporates all your players and gets them moving against the clock to make as many baskets as possible.

A phased closeout drill is then shown followed by 5 on 0 offense where they run through their Princeton Offense and Horns sets.

Advantage Drills and Team Defense
The last phase of the practice session begins with a transition defense drill that works on offense as well as defense simultaneously. In the drill, the defense practices rotations and disadvantages. This drill can be progressed all the way to 5 on 4.

Staying with defense, Coach Amsberry and staff run through their ‘Perfect Defense’ drill which has the team split into three groups as they run from one of the courts to the next working on positioning, guarding actions, and live ball play.

The Cone Advantage teaches not only help and recover concepts on defense but attacking the advantage and maintaining the advantage throughout.

This excellent practice video with Coach Amsberry gives you the tools and ideas to put your team at an advantage this season with an impressive, efficient practice that will sharpen your team in all aspects of the game and get them ready for the season ahead!
