Jerrod Calhoun is widely regarded as an astute basketball mind. This video takes you inside one of his practices and allows you to see how he structures and coaches the game of basketball. The offensive concepts alone demonstrate how he has been able to transform his teams into competitive stalwarts in the Mid-Majors of the NCAAs.
Pre Practice
Coach Calhoun begins the practice with 5v0 work focusing on his “Thumb” family of sets. His players rep 4 different actions off the same set concept during the initial warmup phase of practice. During this time, you are able to watch as Calhoun emphasizes key components of each of the concepts as they build a dynamic set package.
Defensive Segment
After pre-practice and the initial stretch, Coach Calhoun jumps into his first segment of practice. In the first segment, Coach Calhoun meticulously builds his defense step-by-step.
He begins with position work in 1v1 closeout drills. These drills are designed to rep the different types of closeouts his team utilizes in their defensive concepts.
Coach Calhoun then builds into 2v2 and 4v4 breakdowns on off ball screen defense. While the segment clearly focuses on defense, Coach Calhoun also instructs his offensive players on the intricate details of off ball screens.
The defensive segment concludes with a 5v4 defensive disadvantage session that works on rotations.
Offensive Segment
Coach Calhoun has made a name for himself as an offensive guru and his offensive portion of practice clearly demonstrates why he has garnered such acclaim.
Calhoun begins with a full court segment that looks at the whole part of his offensive concepts. He includes transition as well as ½ court instruction to his teams.
Coach Calhoun then proceeds to break his offense down into smaller portions of 3v3 and 4v4 drills that drill aspects of his ball screen concepts. Also, during this time, he reveals a larger portion of his set library by repping the “Horns” family. He concludes the session by working on sets in a 5v5 full court setting.
Wrap-up Drills
The practice video concludes with a variety of drills. From full court shooting to 4v4v4 concept play to “Wofford Closeouts,” Coach Calhoun gives you a variety of drills that you could utilize to enhance any aspect of your program. He concludes by sharing his offensive and defensive philosophies with you so that you may better understand the “why” behind his practice design.
