Director of Basketball Operations for the London Towers (British Basketball League) from 2002 to 2003As a coach who was weaned on the Swing Offense during the formative days of his coaching career, Franklin High School’s Tyler Podoll learned to appreciate the intricacies of an offense that continually places pressure on opposing defenses and capitalizes on defensive mistakes.
Over the years, Podoll also came to appreciate the way that the Dribble Drive attacked the rim and freed up perimeter shooters by utilizing draw-and-kick actions that forced defenses to make tough choices against aggressive opponents.
By ‘marrying’ some of his favorite Dribble Drive actions into his version of the Swing Offense (which he calls ‘The Swing Attack’), Podoll’s teams have found great success on the floor!
In this instructional coaching video, Coach Podoll showcases the secrets to his offensive innovations – including methods for successfully implementing Dribble Drive actions into the Swing Offense, how to best teach them to players, his favorite drills to reinforce player actions by position, multiple entries to get into the Swing Offense and more!
Swing Attack Concepts, Progression Drills & Positional Breakdowns
Coach Podoll explains the concepts of a traditional Swing Offense plus the roles and ideal characteristic traits of each player by position. Explaining that the Swing is a screening and passing offense, Podoll highlights how this offensive system works to tie-up the weak side defense and place stress on the ball-side actions.
This review of a traditional Swing Offense is an effective demonstration that sets up Podoll’s innovations and the Dribble Drive attack components he’s built into his Swing Attack!
Highlighting several effective dribble-attack principles, Podoll shares demonstrations of baseline attacks, elbow attacks and utilizing a 1-4 cut.
Next, Coach Podoll goes through a series of dribble-attack progression drills, including the ‘Continuous-Fill Drill,’ ‘Post Drill,’ the ‘Middle-Cut, Fill-Wake Drill’ and something he calls, ‘The Push Drill.’
From there, Podoll smoothly transitions into a positional breakdown for the Swing Attack system – including demonstrations of the ‘Drive Drift,’ ‘Kick Drift’ and ‘1-4 Cut.’
Reinforcement Drills and Advanced Concepts
With the foundation and rules established and in place for the Swing Attack, Coach Podoll showcases his favorite reinforcement drills that help players perfect the actions and attacks built into this offensive system.
Podoll shows off how to run a variety of effective reinforcement drills such as the ‘Triangle Drill,’ the ‘3-vs-3-vs-3 Drill’ and the ‘Make-It, Take-It Drill.’
Next, Coach Podoll shows two additional reinforcement drills that are helpful in honing the skills necessary to run the Swing Attack – including the ‘Evaluation Drill’ and ‘Make-It, Take-It Continuous Drill.’
Throughout his demonstrations, Podoll provides excellent coaching points and reinforcements, often explaining why and how errors occur in the early stages of teaching this offense.
With the foundation set for running the Swing Attack and the drills that are used to teach and reinforce the concepts, Podoll moves into two highly effective advanced concepts that have helped his offense become explosive and tough to defend.
Coach Podoll showcases the ‘Fade Screen’ and the ‘41-14 Screen’ – including demonstrations that show why they work, how they stress the defense and the many ways that each concept fits within the bigger-picture scheme of the Swing Attack.
Swing Attack: Chalk Talk and Offensive Plays
Coach Podoll runs through an extremely beneficial demonstration of his offense run live, including helpful coaching points of emphasis provided as his players run through the offensive movements that make this system difficult to defend.
From there, Podoll provides five different plays - numbered simply from ‘1 to 5’ - that utilize dribble action. These plays offer a plethora of ways that the Swing Attack can take advantage of the opposing defense and any adjustments an opponent may try to throw at you.
Coach Podoll then moves into a segment that includes an extremely valuable chalk talk section on Swing Attack entries that include, ‘Wing Entry,’ ‘Top Entry,’ a ‘Wing-On-Reversal’ option and several other entries you can use to attack defenses.
Podoll also addresses post-player rules within the Swing Attack system and player needs you may come across as you install this offense into your own attack.
To close out this jam-pack instructional presentation, Coach Podoll offers an inside look at five of his favorite plays out of the Swing Attack offense and uses player demonstrations with coaching tips on what you may expect out of opposing defenses.
This valuable on-the-court instructional video presentation is a must-see for any coach who runs the Swing Offense, or who wants to learn how to incorporate dribble Drive concepts into any continuity type of offense.
Coach Podoll loads up his presentation with highly valuable information, drills, plays and coaching points that will help you implement this proven, game-winning system into your program!
