University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Kyle Rechlicz shares her favorite finishing and shooting drills plus her most-effective methods for teaching proper shooting mechanics. You’ll receive energizing, action-packed and competitive shooting drills in an efficient, intense way that keeps players locked-in and focused.
Coach Rechlicz also shares her favorite methods for building a strong daily practice; this useful information will make you consider other ways to reinforce your team’s mental focus each day!
Practice Planning
Before getting into her approach to shooting and skill development, Coach Rechlicz outlines how she determines what she wants her team to accomplish for the season and takes those goals and makes it a priotity to implement these focal points into her practices.
Coach Rechlicz provides detailed information on her ‘Big 6 Focal Points For Every Practice,’ which includes:
- Defensive Mentality.
- Toughness.
- ‘My-Ball’ Mentality.
- Rebounding.
- Being Shot-Makers.
- Valuing Possessions.
Rechlicz says that every drill that is worked on in practice must touch on one of these six focal points. If a drill does not fit into one of those six parameters, it is not included. To make her shooters effective, Rechlicz explains the process she utilizes to develop players into shot-makers – by teaching proper shooting mechanics and using drills to develop and reinforce shot making.
Finishing Drills
A key component to being a great shooting team is the ability to finish at the basket in transition. Coach Rechlicz showcases several finishing drills where players are not allowed to let the ball touch the floor and she explains that a critical point-of-emphasis in these drills are that all players must lead with passes to where teammates are going, not to where they are.
Rechlicz provides information for how she teaches players to finish at the basket, a needed skill for any player. The first drill presented is ‘Speed Lay-Ups Drill,’ - a two-minute, continuous drill that features an outlet passer making an initial pass up the floor - that leads to a pass to another player streaking down the floor for a lay-up.
Another finishing drill Rechlicz highlights is called the ‘Fly Drill,’ - a full-court drill in which three lines of players start on the baseline with the ball in the middle line. After an initial pass is made to one of the outside lines, the ball is then passed back to the middle before being passed to the opposite line. The player who receives the pass in the opposite line, finishes with a layup.
Shooting Form and Team Shooting Drills
In the 2021 season, Rechlicz’s team set the NCAA record (for both men’s and women’s college teams) for the highest free-throw percentage in a season. Rechlicz credits her team’s incredible, team-wide success with foul shooting, on the ability to teach her players the proper form and mechanics for shooting a basketball. To reinforce proper shooting mechanics, Rechlichz has developed team shooting drills designed to stress these critical shooting procedures.
Though every coach teaches shooting form a bit differently, Rechlicz covers and discusses the important shooting tenets that all shooters must focus on executing properly and consistently, which includes: practicing footwork, bringing the ball out front and following through on the shot correctly. Coach Rechlicz explains that all of the team-shooting drills that she demonstrates include those important shooting tenets and are drills designed to improve overall team shooting performance.
A drill Rechlicz calls ‘UConn Shooting,’ is designed to work on shooting while on the move. This 10-minute drill works on shooting off drift actions, rising actions and step-ins. The ‘UConn Shooting’ goal is to make 75 two-point jumpers and 60 three-point jumpers within the allotted and timed 10-minute shooting period.
This is a game-changing coaching video with a focus on shooting. Rechlicz combines expert-level coaching expertise, with innovative teaching techniques and terrific drills that coaches can implement into their very next practice.
It’s perfect for coaches of any level competition and is sure to get you thinking about the way you teach and approach everything within your program. A must-own video for every coach who wants a better shooting team!
