In today’s game, team’s who possess the ability to make adjustments on the fly separates the good teams from the great teams. Along those lines, it’s interesting to note that teams who dominate transition offense often struggle to adjust in the half-court against good defenses. In this instructional coaching video with on-the-court demonstrations, NBA G-League head coach and longtime successful collegiate coach, Paul Hewitt, showcases how to execute a dominant transition offense and how your players can build their all-around offensive confidence by learning to seamlessly make adjustments when half-court defenses that take away your early options in transition.By teaching you how to train your players to flawlessly execute what Coach Hewitt calls ‘the play-after-the-play’ – you’ll take your offense to the next level and become an efficient, high-scoring team who can quickly earn high-percentage shots by reading the defense and take what is given to them.

Transition Offense, Transition Spacing

Beginning the on-the-court demonstration, Coach Hewitt immediately showcases his vast knowledge of transition offense and emphasizes how winning the first three steps in transition allows your players to have many excellent scoring opportunities. He further demonstrates why good transition offenses place pressure on defenses from the moment they get the ball off the glass.

Coach Hewitt then takes you through a series of build-up drills that will help you teach these attacking skills and shows how it flows into lessons on transition spacing in the half court. In the ‘Fastbreak Layups Drill’ players learn to push the ball ahead and run as fast as they can to get easy buckets.

In the ‘2-on 2 Passing Perfection Drill,’ players work on transition passing and catching skills, as well as getting many repetitions at different types of finishes at the rim. This is an excellent twist to a very common drill everyone uses to work on transition. Instead of one person dribbling up the floor you get two players working on passing ahead.

Every coach has their own preference for how they want their teams to set up offensively as they come down the floor. In a highly valuable segment on transition spacing, Coach Hewitt outlines the 5 spots on the floor that he has his teams set up as they work their way down court on offense – with the goal of stretching the defense and creating opportunities for layups.

By starting players in each corner and just off the slot, while also utilizing a rim runner, Coach Hewitt shows how you can create gaps in the defense that they will struggle to cover. Hewitt offers a variety of options in his lesson on transition spacing, running through terrific examples with the on-the-court demonstrators as they play 5-on-0.

‘The Play After The Play’ and Flow Action

Next, Coach Hewitt runs through an informative segment on what to do when your transition offense is stopped and your primary scoring options are taken away. This lies in the concept of ‘the play after the play’ – which includes actions that can make your offense seem unstoppable.

Following simple principles, such as, ‘how to create paint touches,’ ‘changing sides of the floor,’ ‘using step-up screens,’ ‘using pin-down screens and ‘never driving to where the ball came from’ – Coach Hewitt provides a blueprint for helping your half-court offense to become seemingly unscoutable! You will also learn how to use your post player to create as many 2-on-1 screening situations as you need, creating a plethora of mismatches and downhill driving opportunities.

Rounding out his valuable lesson, Hewitt provides his best techniques for teaching the most-common half-court action that most NBA teams use today – ‘The Flow Series.’

In demonstrating the Flow Series,  Coach Hewitt shows how your players can learn to create driving opportunities and work to incorporate the aforementioned ‘play-after-the-play’ concepts into this attack. Using an initial 5-on-0 setup, the coach goes through the most important Flow Series concepts your players will need to understand, with actions and reads, building them up to a 5-on-5 live half-court offense setting.

This is a must-watch video and serves as a detailed learning opportunity from one of the brightest, most-accomplished coaches in all of basketball. Coach Hewitt has provided a ‘Master Class’ on building up your transition offense and pushing your players to play fast and smart, while working for easy buckets and gaining confidence that your players can score and create offensive opportunities any time a play breaks down or all options have been stopped.

This is even a great video to add to your collection if you are looking to teach your players how to play the game the right way and incorporate NBA Actions into your half-court offense!

Coach Rating:5 out of 5 stars. ‘Coach Hewitt places an emphasis on the most-important details for success in both transition and half-court offense. His ability to teach the concept of the-play-after-the-play is awesome and helps any team, who runs any system.’
