In this video, Coach Sharman White demonstrates the drills he uses for his high school and USA Basketball teams to prepare them to compete at a high level and teaches viewers the inside details of his ‘Gold Medal’-caliber defensive concepts!

USA Non-Negotiables, Defensive Drills & Concepts

White kicks things off by zeroing in on the importance of what he calls ‘basketball’s non-negotiables.’ The coach stresses the need for coaches at all levels to push their players to give maximum effort every day and reinforces the concept that what you emphasize helps to build your team’s identity. White adds that to play for the national team, players must apply ball pressure, communicate at a high level, force opponents to the baseline, compete on every possession and work to give multiple efforts – explaining that these non-negotiables are the foundations and defensive pillars for USA Basketball.

From there, White provides excellent defensive drills he’s used to build up individual defender skills and to strengthen his overall team defense. Starting with the ‘5-Star Closeout Drill’ viewers are shown how players learn to improve defensive communication by calling out different positions as the ball swings rapidly to a variety of areas on the floor. This drill serves as a great way to get players fired up and ready to start practice with energy.

White then showcases the ‘Jump-To-The-Ball Drill,’ where defenders start off the ball and work on their positioning. Viewers are shown why this drill is highly effective in getting players to improve on their closeouts and ability to move on the flight of the ball as it is swung around the perimeter. To end this drill, the USA Basketball coach shows how they transition into 1-on-1 to help build a defender’s pressure defense on the ball.

In the ‘X-Positioning Drill,’ viewers watch how defenders’ work on moving on the flight of the ball, so they are in an ideal position to close out on the offensive player as he or she catches the ball. White shows how this drill is excellent for improving the defenses’ ability to force baseline and force a turnover by stealing a skip pass.

3-on-3 and 4-on-4 Competitive Drills

White points out that competing at a high level is one of the staples of USA Basketball teams. To build in a sense of competition, USA Basketball incorporates 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 drills into their daily practice routine. White adds that these types of drills allow him to emphasize more of his team defense concepts, as well as help to build pride among players in getting stops.

Viewers are shown ‘Memphis Closeouts,’ which is a drill where defenders focus on half-court positioning and rotations out of different skip passes. It also serves as a great drill to build trust amongst teammates on the defensive end.

In the ‘Breakdown Actions Drill,’ White demonstrates how to take common actions opponents like to run and work on defending them. He demonstrates by showing how he uses this drill to teach defensive players how to defend a UCLA cut into a ball-screen and dribble handoff into the ball-screen.

White then showcases the ‘4-On-4, Perfect-Defense Drill,’ which puts a player’s effort to the test. In this drill, viewers will see that players have 24 seconds to get a perfect stop and switch to offense. The coach says that this is another great way to build team pride in defense and helps provide the confidence necessary to get key stops in the middle of an opposing team’s run, as well as serves as a way to build toughness in your squad and show players how to forge on through adversity.

Through the drills White demonstrated in this must-watch defensive video, viewers get a first-hand look at the concepts and techniques that USA Basketball teams successfully utilize on the defensive end of the floor.

Best of all, these are highly effective, practical drills that can be easily incorporated into your own practices and tweaked to emphasize the core concepts that your team emphasizes on defense.

Coach Review: 5 out of 5 Stars“ These are great drills to help build what you want to emphasize and focus on (those concepts) every day.”
