Jennie Baranczyk has been turning heads with the success she’s had at Oklahoma after taking over for longtime Sooners coaching legend, Sherri Coale. In this video, viewers get an inside look at the drills and teaching techniques she uses to train her players – helping them to make better in-game decisions and display consistent, on-court improvement.

Shooting Drills, Transition Build-Up

Coaches who are looking for competitive shooting drills to help their players get more reps in practice are in for a treat, as Baranczyk shows us her favorite dynamic warmup with game-like shooting drills that are designed to get players moving.

This workout includes ‘warmup shooting’ – where players set up in four lines and have to beat the clock by knocking down so many shots from each corner and each elbow. In ‘On the Move Shooting’ players are constantly moving to get shots up from 3 different spots with a focus on using proper footwork as they step into their shots.

The shooting warmup concludes with a terrific ’30-and-a-half-shooting’ drill– where players are split into different teams and compete against one another team to make 10 layups, 10 two’s from anywhere on the floor, 10 three’s from anywhere on the perimeter and then one half-court shot before the other team. It’s an effective and competitive team shooting drill that coaches can use every day in practice.

Next, Coach Baranczyk goes through a walk-through of the build-up drills and quick scoring options her players look for whenever they are pushing the ball in transition. Starting with a 2-on-0 drill that focuses on effective passes and maximizing scoring opportunities, she then shows how the drill builds up from 2-on-0 to 3-on-0, to 4-on-0, and 5-on-0 situations; all the while, she has her players focusing on proper spacing, how to play off a baseline drive, middle drives and post touches.

Advantage and Disadvantage Drills

Baranczyk highlights two highly effective drills that will push both your offense and defense to improve during advantage and disadvantage situations. In one of her favorite drills, a 4-on-2 drill, players are put into three different teams and given a goal of scoring in a half-court, 4-on-2 situation.

In the ‘3-on-2 continuous’ drills, teams set up in a 3-on-2 situation in the half court. Both sides of the floor are working together and once the offense scores on one side, the defense must try to get the ball down to the opposite side of the floor.

Throughout this video, Coach Baranczyk demonstrates that the most effective offenses continuously work to create open shots and scoring opportunities. As such, the Sooners coach jam-packs this video with great shooting drills that are designed for players to get a lot of shots up while performing at game-like speed. The decision-making work built into these drills will help train your players to gain offensive advantages while using quick reads during games.
